ECWG Dinner: Dr. Robert Griffith: Conserving Endangered Rhinos in South Africa by Dehorning

April 21 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Mana Rhino

ECWG Members, Associates/Friends, Guests, and those on the Non-Members Guest List are cordially invited to the third ECWG dinner meeting of 2018 at the Cosmos Club, with after dinner presentation by Dr. Robert Griffith.  Dr. Griffith’s presentation will discuss the history and development of the dehorning project at an animal reserve.

About the Presentation

Dr. Griffith’s presentation will discuss:

  1. The history and development of the dehorning project at the reserve with which he is involved.
  2. The changing character and brutality of rhino poaching with thoughts regarding the vast increase in incidents.
  3. The dehorning procedure itself and data being collected to study its effects.
  4. Early field observations concerning dehorned rhino behavior.
  5. Closing interview with reserve management regarding personal observations and opinion.
  6. Conclusion and summary including points of conflict and opposing viewpoints.

The presentation will hopefully be both informative and entertaining, interspersed with Dr. Griffith’s photos of the beauty of South Africa and its wildlife.

About Our Speaker

Dr. Robert R. Griffith MN’16 is a retired Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He served in the United States Army Reserve with a discharge rank of Lt. Col. and is a life member of the American Legion. Dr. Griffith has also been active in his community for decades, serving in multiple elected and appointed positions ranging from School Board Director to Chairman of the Montgomery County (PA) Board of Health.

A particular interest is the National Park Service; Dr. Griffith and his family have traveled to all forty-seven National Parks in the contiguous United States. He started his National Park adventures when he hitchhiked across the United States at age eighteen to camp in Rocky Mountain National Park. Dr. Griffith has had a life-long interest in the outdoors and wildlife, as a wide-eyed seven year old becoming particularly fascinated with the rhinoceros after seeing the movie Hatari!, which prominently featured rhinos.

Dr. Griffith, a strong advocate for animal conservation, was curious about the concept of rhino dehorning as an adjunct to preservation of the species, traveling to South Africa and listening to people struggling with the horror of poaching on a daily basis. After multiple interviews and seeing the dehorning approach in action, he became a believer, and now works to educate others about this addition to the overall effort to save these magnificent animals. After returning home, he has continued his relationship with the reserve he visited by sending much needed medical supplies.

Dr. Griffith is a recent member but long-time admirer of the Explorers Club and its principles. He is a Board member of the Philadelphia Chapter for which he initiated and writes a chapter newsletter.
