ECWG Dinner: Hidden Treasure – Panoramic Photographs of the Alaskan Frontier by Topographers of the United States Geological Survey by Richard E. Schneider

October 16 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends, Members’ Guests and Non-Members’ Guest List You are cordially invited to the October 2021 ECWG dinner meeting at the Cosmos Club, w/ after-dinner presentations by Richard E. Schneider.

About the Presentation

Hidden Treasure chronicles a preservation project at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that was full of unexpected discoveries. When in the early 1900’s, the US Geological Survey (USGS) embarked to survey the interior of the Alaska Territory, it was conceived that panoramic photography could aid tremendously in gathering visual data of the vast landscape. The effort to turn theory into results was spearheaded by James Bagley. A century later, these photographs were preserved on film at NARA and in limited cases, digitized for access. A close examination of these scans uncovered the fact that individual shots could be digitally combined to form still larger panoramas. Therein lies the hidden treasure. It is believed that only a handful of these were ever seen as assembled panoramas as the topographer intended, until now. This presentation will focus on the original photographs, the preservation effort, the hidden panoramas that are potentially found in many collections, the importance of these images in our modern world, and the legacy of Mr. Bagley.

About Our Speakers

Since 1992, Richard has worked in the Preservation Division at NARA. Among the many specialized projects that he has worked on, none has been more rewarding than preserving original nitrate-based negatives of Alaska shot by the USGS.

After graduating from RIT in 1983, Richard made a decidedly “unartistic” career move by becoming a cruise ship photographer. During these years, he visited southeastern Alaska dozens of times and cultivated his love for the beauty of the state as well as his interest in panoramic photography.

At NARA, Richard was able to not only preserve many of the panoramic holdings, but to also provide access and promotion of this often-overlooked body of work. NARA has sponsored two exhibits of panoramic photography based on Richard’s work and dedication to the medium.
