Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends, Members’ Guests and Non-Members’ Guest List You are cordially invited to the November 2021 ECWG dinner meeting at the Cosmos Club, w/ after-dinner presentations by Diane Burko.

About the Presentation

Diane Burko is an American painter and photographer, currently based in Philadelphia and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Her work addresses landscapes, climate change, and environmental activism. Diane was born in Brooklyn, New York and received a B.S. in art history and painting from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. She is professor emeritus at the Community College of Philadelphia, and has taught at various schools across the country, including: Princeton University, Arizona State University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She’s been awarded residencies by the Lila Wallace Acheson Foundation in Giverny, France, The Bellagio Conference and Study Center, and by the Arctic Circle Organization.
Since 2013, Diane has embarked on research expeditions to glaciers and reefs around the world. There, she explores the impacts of climate change with particular emphasis on glacial melt and coral bleaching. In 2013, she traveled to Antarctica in January and the high Arctic in October. These expeditions led to a body of work entitled “Polar Investigations.” In 2017, her exploration of landscapes affected by climate change continued with glaciers in New Zealand, along with The Great Barrier Reef. In January 2018, Diane travelled to American Samoa, Oahu, and Honolulu with the non-profit project “Kai ‘Apapa,” a multimedia exploration of American coral reef systems, in collaboration with a climatologist, a composer/video artist, and a composer/clarinetist. The project aimed to raise awareness of the rapid changes to coral reef systems, and to present the scientific ramifications through art and performance.

Currently, Diane’s work is featured at an exhibit titled: SEEING CLIMATE CHANGE, Diane Burko: 2002-2021, at the American University Museum in Washington DC. You can see her exhibit through December 12, 2021. For more information, visit: https://www.american.edu/cas/museum/2021/seeing-climate-change-diane-burko.cfm
