About the Presentation

Long-range aeromagnetic survey of parts of the Bellingshausen and Weddell Seas, Antarctica This joint survey was conducted from the Argentine Marine Base at the civilian airport in Rio Grande, Terra del Fuego by Lamont-Doherty Geophysical Observatory, the Naval Research Laboratory, and the Instituto Antártico Argentino, with the support of the Argentine Navy. Using a US Navy P-3A Orion aircraft configured for airborne geophysics, the survey took place while the first 4 satellites of the GPS constellation were going up in the autumn of 1987 and while marine geophysicists were still putting time hacks on paper charts produced during seismic surveys. This was, in other words, ‘the good old days’ before digital surveying, archiving, digital transmission of data, and base-analysis of remotely accessed data. This presentation will briefly describe the science, the logistics and requirements of carrying out long-range surveys from a remote base, as well as some experiences.

About Our Speakers

Michael has had a varied career in geology, geophysics, physical acoustics, scientific diving, project design and management. He has spent over 30 years as a field scientist and mapper and at sea as a marine scientist carrying out scientific diving and marine surveying programs. He has been Chief Scientist on a NATO-funded research vessel, conducting oceanographic and bathymetric studies mainly in the Mediterranean Sea region. He attended the University of Wisconsin (BSc), the University of Wyoming (MSc), and Trinity College Dublin (PhD). He has been employed by the Geological Survey of Ireland, where he first transitioned from structural and metamorphic geology to marine geology; the Naval Research Laboratory (Washington DC); the NATO Undersea Research Institute and Marine Desalination Systems (MDS), a small R&D company, as Chief Scientist and CEO. MDS was funded through DARPA and ONR to explore used for gas hydrate for chemical engineering approaches to seawater desalination, industrial water treatment, and gas separation. He is now too old to get a real job and is currently operating a consultancy, developing new technology and methodology for commercializing natural gas hydrate, which is probably the largest natural gas resource on Earth. He is a member of the Methane Hydrate Advisory Committee of the Secretary of Energy for natural gas hydrate. He has published 6 books, authored or co-authored over 300 scientific publications, and developed more than 45 U.S. Patents, the most recent of which was published this January.
