ECWG Dinner: Matt Rutherford: Circumnavigating the Americas by Sail, a Year at Sea

January 20 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Matt Rutherford Sailing

ECWG members and their guest are cordially invited to the first ECWG dinner meeting and after dinner presentation of 2018 by Matt Rutherford, at the Cosmos Club on Saturday, 20 January 2018 at 6:00 PM

About the Presentation

Matt Rutherford routeMatt Rutherfordis the first person in history to complete a non-stop, single-handed voyage in a small sailing vessel around both North and South America without setting foot on land. Matt departed from Annapolis, MD on June 2011 and traversed some of the most dangerous seas on earth. This included both Polar oceans on the same voyage.

During the first leg of his trip, Matt broke a record by sailing through the Northwest Passage in the smallest sailboat yet recorded to have completed this voyage. Once through this northern passage, Matt sailed the eastern Pacific well away from the coasts of the Americas.

He made his last significant turn to port at storm- tossed Cape Horn and completed his record- breaking journey back to Annapolis in 309 days after sailing 27,077 non-stop nautical miles (~ 50,147 km).

About Our Speaker Matt Rutherford

About our speaker, Matt Rutherford. Presentation: Circumnavigating the Americas by sail, a year at sea.

Since completing his circumnavigation of the Americas, Matt Rutherford founded Ocean Research Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to science, education and exploration, and to helping scientists better understand the problems facing the oceans. In 2013 Matt spent 70 days in the Atlantic Ocean mapping the unexplored eastern side of the ‘Atlantic Garbage Patch’.

In 2014 Matt sailed from San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan, 6,800 miles non-stop, collecting water samples to better understand the ‘plastisphere’, a microbial layer of bacteria hitchhiking on billions of fine grains of waste plastic. In 2015 and 2016, Matt’s organization worked primarily as part of NASA’s Ocean Melting Greenland program mapping uncharted regions in the northern Labrador sea and the Canadian Arctic Islands. Since completing his first ever non-stop solo circumnavigation of the Americas, Matt has sailed more than 25,000 nautical miles in pursuit of scientific data.

Matt believes that no one person can do everything but everyone can do something. His Ocean Research Project’s goal is to educate people about marine issues and contribute to the knowledge base of the Earth’s oceans. He is determined to explore, under sail, the oceans of the Arctic Polar Region, which are the most sensitive to the amplified impacts of warming climate upon Earth’s oceans. In addition to ocean research, Matt Rutherford is a yacht broker, a filmmaker, and is finishing his first book, scheduled to be published in the summer of 2018.
