ECWG Black Tie Gala: Thirty years in the Valley of the Crescent Moon – Petra, Jordan: Tom Paradise

December 1, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Washington Group Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends & Members’ Guests, and Non- Members’ Guest List are cordially invited to the December 2018 ECWG BLACK TIE GALA dinner meeting at the Cosmos Club, with an after-dinner presentation by Tom Paradise
Saturday, 1 December 2018 at 6:00 PM

About the Presentation

Paradise will analyze and discuss the 2,000 year-old Nabataean architecture and its reconstruction in Petra, Jordan. Trained in geology, architecture, geography and cartography, Tom has consulted on Petra for numerous production outlets including NOVA, Discovery Channel, Smithsonian Channel, NatGeo, NBC and CBS-TV.  He has published more than 60 articles, reports and chapters on Petra for publications such as the Journal of Architectural Conservation, American Journal of Archaeology, Geomorphology, Geografiska Annaler, and Zeitschrift für Geomorphologie.

As witnessed in his PBS-Nova documentary, his fieldwork experiments exploring the theory of how the ancient Nabataean community constructed the magnificent facades in the stone cliffs was groundbreaking, literally and figuratively. The documentary has been viewed by more than 50 million viewers, more than any other PBS documentary special.
