ECWG members and their guests are cordially invited to the ECWG GALA (Black tie) dinner meeting and after dinner presentation by Lee Talbot MED57, at the Cosmos Club Saturday, 9 December 2017 6:00 PM.

About the Presentation

When most people think of automobile racing, they usually think of NASCAR sedans circling around an oval track. Other than television time, any other contribution to society is not in their mental picture. However, circle track drivers are vastly outnumbered by those who drive on road race circuits. The contributions of motor racing to society are many and significant, ranging from myriad improvements to our passenger cars, spinoffs to the aircraft industry, and contributions from our WW II efforts including race radios, and helmets, and stronger fire-retardant safety gear constantly improving the safety of children and others on bicycles and in other sports.

Successful race driving is not just climbing into a car and stepping on the gas. It starts earlier with rigorous mental preparation, then involves the application of science, psychology, and rigorous, unwavering, focused attention and analysis. Successful road racing requires good physical condition, great reflexes and what Lee Talbot calls “an intellectual approach.”

His approach involves three sets of mental skills. One involves the applied physics of keeping the car on the course at the highest possible speed. Another involves interacting with and anticipating the behavior of the 20 to 80 other drivers on the track. But to Lee, most important is mental preparation and rigorous discipline. Successful road racing is a truly precision sport. After an hour’s race Lee often finishes within less than a second of the following cars. Once this year he was 0.006 of a second from the other leading car.

Lee will describe the nature of modern road racing, the role of road racing in society, including contributions to society that come from motor racing, and what is necessary to be a successful race driver.
