The Museum and Historic Site shows how Alexandria Virginia functioned as a vital Union Army strongpoint in the ring of forts around Washington DC, and as one of the principal seaports that allowed the Union Navy to control the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Estuary. The Museum displays depict life within the Defenses of Washington and the everyday life of Civil War soldiers and civilians.
