About the Presentation

Robert Nickelsberg, MN’15, will speak and show photographs from his experiences as a photographer covering the civil war in El Salvador from 1981-1984 for Time magazine and working in Afghanistan over a period of nearly thirty years starting in 1988. He will discuss how he illustrated foreign policy and how access is gained by photographers and reporters to cover the forces involved. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

About Our Speaker

Robert Nickelsberg worked as a Time magazine contract photographer for nearly 30 years, specializing in political and cultural change in developing countries. He is the author of Afghanistan – A Distant War, published in 2013 by Prestel, which represents his 25 years of work in Afghanistan. The book received the 2013 Olivier Rebbot Award from the Overseas Press Club presented for the best photographic reporting from abroad in magazines or books. Nickelsberg’s new book, Afghanistan’s Heritage: Restoring Spirit and Stone, done in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State, was published in English and Dari in May 2018 and soon in Pashto. He was a 2019 Logan Nonfiction Fellow during which he brought together his 1982-1984 photographic coverage of the Guatemalan civil war combining the archival documentation of genocide of the Ixil Maya by the Guatemalan military. Nickelsberg became an Explorers Club fellow in 2015.
