ECWG Virtual Meeting: Melai Mai: Promoting Food Security, Local Food, and Sustainability For Island Communities Across Micronesia by Amanda Uowolo

May 15 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

About the Presentation

Amanda will take us on a journey to the remote islands of Micronesia where she is working to promote agroforestry of breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), a traditional crop for many indigenous communities across the Pacific.

Amanda has been working with communities and partners across the islands of Yap and Palau with the goal to improve food security, reduce dependence on imported foods, and increase the awareness of the bio- cultural value of the many breadfruit varieties found in the islands. She will share some of her passion for this amazing tree and this special part of the world.

About Our Speaker

Amanda Uowolo is an Ecologist with the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry of the USDA Forest Service in Hilo, Hawaii. She has been with the Institute for the past 19 years and her work has focused on the impacts of invasive species, restoration of degraded areas, long-term forest monitoring, outreach integrating bio-cultural perspectives, and community-based agroforestry. Her work with breadfruit began as a grassroots humanitarian response to Super Typhoon Maysak in the Federated States of Micronesia and has since expanded and become integrated into the USDA Forest Service’s work across the region. Amanda was recognized by the US Secretary of Agriculture in 2018 as a USDA “Unsung Hero” for her work with Melai Mai and was selected to be a “Breadfruit Champion” in 2020 by the Pacific Island Farmers Organization Network based in Fiji. Her greatest satisfaction has come from witnessing the trees planted as part of this effort feeding families across the region.
