ECWG Virtual Meeting: The Environmental Setting of the Aral Sea by Austin Ager

July 18 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends, Members’ Guests and Non-Members’ Guest List You are cordially invited to the July 2020 ECWG virtual via Zoom.

About the Presentation

The Aral Sea was once a majestic body of water located between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The Aral Sea proudly wore the title of 4th largest lake in the world. The lake has been shrinking exponentially, when the rivers that fed into the sea were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. Now it has diminished to a 10th of its size and former glory. The lakes rapid reduction has caused huge ecological problems for the species it once housed, and the population of humans that once thrived there.

The mismanagement and shrinking of the Aral Sea is one of the worst environmental disasters in human history. The lake is now split into 4 regions known as the North and South Aral Sea, accompanied by the eastern and western basins. Satellite images taken by NASA have shown that the eastern basin had completely dried up in 2014. At the turn of the century plans were put into place to help save the Aral Sea. The presentation will be on the current environmental setting, what is being done to remediate the situation, and what we can expect in the future.

About our speaker

Austin Ager is a long-time student member of the Explorers Club Washington Group. Austin got his start with ECWG being selected as one of the Eagle Scouts to assist the 2013 Lowell Thomas Award Weekend. After expressing an interest in the club and applying, he was granted a student membership. Austin began his schooling majoring in Business Administration. Being inspired by The Explorers Club he changed his major to Environmental Management, where he continues his studies at University of Maryland, Global Campus. Austin currently serves as the Assistant Program Director of ECWG and looks forward to helping the club in the future.

In addition to being a student, Austin runs a non-profit organization that provides after-school basketball programs to elementary school students in Montgomery County, MD.
