ECWG Gala Dinner: Ornithological Explorations – Past and Present An Unforeseen Foundation for Aviation Safety by Carla Dove, PhD

December 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends, Members’ Guests and Non-Members’ Guest List You are cordially invited to the December 2022 ECWG Gala dinner meeting at the Cosmos Club, w/ after-dinner presentations by Carla Dove, PhD. (Black Tie Suggested)

About the Presentation

Educated in wildlife biology, environmental sciences and public policy, Carla will speak about the avian research collections at the National Museum of Natural History and how this resource is currently used in a way that was likely never imagined by the early explorers who traveled the globe to establish these massive collections. Today, Carla and her team use specimens, DNA, and microscopic feather characters to identify birds involved in bird-aircraft collisions (Birdstikes) from fragmented evidence known as ‘snarge’. Once the problematic species are known, mitigation efforts, engine design and computer modeling helps keep birds and aircraft apart, thereby creating safer skies for all who fly.

About our Speaker

Carla J. Dove grew up in the Shenandoah Valley near George Washington National Forest. Her early hobbies lead her to become interested in wildlife, and later helped fuel her passion for birds. She now manages a program with a staff of five that processes over 10,000 birdstrike cases annually.

Carla has conducted specialized research in the microscopic identification of feathers. Current research involves applying forensic techniques to determine species of birds from fragmentary evidence using microscopy, whole feather comparisons with museum specimens and DNA ‘barcoding’. The most important application of this research is to the field of aviation safety and determining identifications of birds that are ingested into aircraft engines (birdstrikes). She also works with Anthropologist’s to identify birds used in cultural items; assists Ecologists in the study of prey remains from invasive species, and has even worked on food contamination studies.
