ECWG World Oceans Day: “Sperm Whales: Gentle Goliaths of the Ocean” by Gaelin Rosenwaks FN’06

Explorers Club members, member’s guests, associates, & friends are cordially invited to the ECWG World Oceans Day 2024 dinner & presentation by Explorers Club Fellow Gaelin Rosenwaks, to be held at the Cosmos Club on Saturday, June 8th, 2024 at 6:00 PM.

Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist, explorer, photographer, and filmmaker. She is an accomplished diver and boat captain who explores the world’s oceans and documents these unique ecosystems through her photography and research. As an active member of The Explorers Club, she has served as Secretary of the Board and carried the Explorer’s Flag with honor on two expeditions to the Arctic. In 2020, Gaelin worked with sperm whales in Dominica and her research was featured as the cover story in Outside Magazine. Gaelin earned her Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University. She worked on significant projects conducting research on the migratory movements of Giant Bluefin Tuna and the Tag-A-Giant program. She continues to do fieldwork in the Antarctic, Arctic and both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans on some of the most advanced icebreakers and fishing vessels.

 

About Our Speaker Gaelin Rosenwaks

Gaelin Rosenwaks, FN’06, is a marine scientist, explorer, photographer, filmmaker and the author of Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans (Rizzoli, 2022). She began her career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in Antarctica on zooplankton and earned a Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University. Her concern for the critical changes happening across the world’s oceans led Gaelin to found Global Ocean Exploration Inc. and share her passion for ocean exploration and marine conservation. This Marine Scientist now participates in and conducts ocean expeditions to educate the public about the challenges facing our oceans, and what science is doing to understand these changes. She is a Fellow at the Explorers Club, Royal Geographical Society and Member of the Society of Women Geographers. Gaelin was the co-chair of ECAD 2016 “Oceans”, and a member of the Conservation Committee. In addition, she has participated in the EC Head Quarters Oceans Week in New York. This author has published articles in scientific journals, newspapers, magazines, and delivered lectures at global conferences and renowned institutions. Gaelin has appeared as an expert and host on television programs to include, The Discovery Channel, Science Channel, CBS News, and the National Geographic Channel. Her photography has been featured in many exhibitions; including solo exhibits at Duke University, The Maritime Aquarium, and the Patagonia Upper West Side Store in NYC. Gaelin, a licensed Coast Guard Captain, lives to be on the open ocean surrounded by endless blue water and marine life. This passion for the ocean and conservation is infectious and her mission is to inspire others to get involved and embrace conservation that will help protect our planet and its oceans.

Gaelin’s latest project is a film called Finding Physty. A story about her personal connection to these majestic animals that started during her first childhood encounter with a Sperm Whale.
